Some Clueless Lowlights from George W. Bush’s Trump-bashing Speech

Long reviled, lambasted and accused of atrocities by the mainstream media and progressives, Former President George W. Bush recently found his way into their good graces. All he had to do to get this approval was come out swinging at President Donald Trump.

Bush teamed up with another former president, Barack Obama, to launch a lineup of thinly veiled criticisms that attacked President Trump without every using the word “Trump,” and the media responded with overwhelming praise. Finally, Bush figured out how to win the approval of the liberal media.

Following his barely disguised criticisms, Bush was awarded with a lovely profile of his twin daughters in the New York Times. This piece is a long way from the Times’ former coverage of the Bush girls, which was in turns critical and mocking.

Bush’s recent speech certainly appealed to the liberal press, but how truthful was it, and how far has he strayed from the conservatives who supported him for so long? Just a few of his tone-deaf statements are outlined below – quotes courtesy of Town & Country magazine:

“Free trade helped make America into a global economic power.”

Free trade did not exactly build America; visionaries and true American statesmen like Alexander Hamilton, Henry Clay, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt would definitely disagree with Bush on this one.

“Thank God I’m not a free trader. In this country pernicious indulgence in the doctrine of free trade seems inevitably to produce fatty degeneration of the moral fiber.” – Teddy Roosevelt, 1895

“In recent decades, public confidence in our institutions has declined.”

Bush has a terrible record of public confidence and trust; in trust in the federal government fell from 60 percent to 24 percent during his time in office. Despite this, Bush is suggesting this low approval is somehow a new phenomenon.

“We’ve seen nationalism distorted into nativism—forgotten the dynamism that immigration has always brought to America.”

Legal immigration is a wonderful thing, but Bush toes the Democratic Party line here implying that all immigration is beneficial and that there are no issues or problems caused by those who thwart the legally outlined process and jump ahead in line to arrive or stay illegally.

“In serving as a shining hope for refugees and a voice for dissidents, human rights defenders, and the oppressed.”

Bush’s own policies and actions directly contributed to some of the chaos, oppression and injustices seen in the Middle East today.

Presidents typically do not interfere with or comment on the actions of their successors after leaving office, but along with George W. Bush, both Barack Obama and Bill Clinton have taken subtle and not-so subtle jabs at the sitting president. Fortunately for Trump, these actions do not seem to have much of an impact on his brand or success. The mainstream media already hates him, as do progressives, so while Bush’s remarks make him more acceptable to these groups, they don’t really have much impact on Trump himself.

None of the former presidents mentioned President Trump, but they have delivered statements about “nationalism”, “protectionism” and even about the use of “bullying’ in the role.

As for Obama, in some of his fist post-presidency appearances he began to warn about the changes being made to his own achievements such the dismantling of the Affordable Care Act, criticism of the Iran nuclear deal and other issues, stating:

“Some of the politics we see now, we thought we had put that to bed,” Obama said. “That’s folks looking 50 years back. It’s the 21st Century, not the 19th Century.”

And, without naming names:

“We’ve got folks who are deliberately trying to make folks angry — to demonize people who have different ideas; to get the base all riled up because it provides a short-term tactical advantage.”

So far, President Trump has not responded to either former presidents’ implied criticisms, even on Twitter. These and other critical remarks represent a large departure from the way former presidents generally behave towards current leaders. For Bush, the obvious currying of favor towards the mainstream press smacks of desperation and an overwhelming need for approval and positive attention after years of derision.
