Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Stop Having Kids to Fight Climate Change

Given the fact that New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is determined to involve big government in every aspect of ordinary citizens’ lives, it is no surprise that she is now weighing in on what should be a private decision; that is, the choice to have one or more children.

In a recent Instagram Live video, AOC spoke to supporters as she cooked and then wonders aloud if having kids is OK given the fact that life is so hard for ordinary people, and will only get harder thanks to the impending doom that climate change will bring.

In the Instagram video, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez specifically claims that there is a scientific consensus that the lives of children will be difficult. However, she fails to note where she obtained this information, or any evidence to back up her claims. This isn’t surprising given the fact that anyone who knows a bit about history would have to concede that life for children is far easier now than it was in even the recent past.

Labor laws prevent children from working in dangerous jobs, a national school system offers at least a semblance of an education to children throughout the country, and welfare and food stamps supposedly prevent people from going hungry. When have kids had it better, exactly?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez then started rambling about the fact that many would-be parents are tens of thousands of dollars in debt due to student loans, and there are many children in the United States who are in need of loving, responsible parents. While both points are true, saying that they justify everyone making a decision to never have kids is a bit of a stretch.

First of all, there are plenty of ways to avoid getting into student debt; at the same time, many couples opt to have one or more kids even while paying back student debt. Furthermore, many people prefer having their own kids to adopting other children, especially considering the fact that, in the United States, it is not unheard of for biological parents to take adoptive parents to court in order to get the children back.

It would seem that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is approaching the issue in the same way she approached the creation of the Green New Deal. In other words, she is voicing her opinions on the subject and leaving it at that. At the same time, there is certainly cause for concern about Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s comments when one considers that she is pushing for more government control over everyone’s lives, and is a member of a party that embraces abortion as a “right to choose”.

One can only wonder if her comments are a prelude to a new resolution that would restrict people from having large families in the name of combating “climate change”. While laws and resolutions interfering with how many children a couple can have is something that’s only been seen in Communist China and various sci-fi films, they could actually be put in place at some point in the future if radical, left-leaning politicians gain power.

Remember, it wasn’t that long ago when abortion up until the point of birth was written off as a right-wing scare tactic — yet here we are.

The only people who should have a say in how many kids a couple has are the parents themselves. You would figure that a so-called working class champion would understand that…
