Democrats are Freaking Out Over Potential Howard Shultz 20202 Run

Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is well known for his support of Democratic Party causes. However, the fact that he is considering running for the presidency in 2020 as an independent is freaking Democrats out.

Leading DNC members are calling on Schultz to abandon the idea while rank and file Democrats are pledging to boycott Starbucks if he ignores them. Neera Tanden, the president of the Center for American Progress, called Shultz’s proposed run a “vanity project” while left-leaning billionaire politician Michael Bloomberg has categorically stated that it is impossible for an independent candidate to win the White House.

Shultz actually has a lot going for him should he decide to run. The fact that he grew up in public housing and was the first person in his family to graduate from college will help his message resonate with lower-middle class and poor voters. He purchased Starbucks when it was a small company, and turned it into the global giant that it is today, which clearly shows that he knows a lot about success and wealth generation. He has shown that he cares about those who work for him by making it a point to give both full and part-time employees stock options and health insurance. He even covers tuition for workers who want to earn a bachelor’s degree online.

On top of all this, Shultz is also known for his sharp criticisms of President Donald Trump — which is always a win for liberal voters. He vowed to hire 10,000 refuges just as the president was announcing a travel ban on citizens from over half a dozen countries, and has said that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is both reckless and unnecessary. He has also given more than $150,000 to Democratic politicians over the years. Beneficiaries of his gifts include Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama and Sen. Chuck Schumer. His commitment to Democrat causes is sure to earn him at least some support from liberal voters.

Let’s just say that Schultz is no right-winger, but Democratic elites hate him anyway.

First of all, Shultz is a straight white male, something that won’t fly in a party that is putting a premium on identity politics. Even more importantly, Shultz refuses to move to the far left in order to appear to ultra-leftwing voters. He has criticized Medicare for All, free tuition at public colleges, and massive tax hikes for rich Americans, stating that these policies are simply unrealistic. Instead, Shultz has said that, should he run, his focus would be on expanding the economy and curbing entitlements in order to decrease the national debt — basically a cardinal sin for progressives.

However, the most important reason why Democrats are beside themselves with rage over the idea of an independent Shultz presidential run is that they are afraid his candidacy would decrease their voter base, and result in President Trump winning another term in the White House. Shultz, however, is unmoved by this criticism.

Howard Shultz has not officially decided to run, but it is obvious that he is seriously considering doing so. He has already hired consultants, and is currently on a book tour to various cities. He has said in the past that he thinks his future could include public service. The fact that Shultz has billions of dollars to invest in his own campaign would mean that he would not be beholden to large donors who may or may not be willing to fund a third-party challenge to the current president. However, Shultz faces a great deal of opposition not from the party he has always opposed, but from a party that he spent his life supporting.
