Women who think they are men can now avail themselves of free sanitary pads and tampons at Washington State University as the campus has begun stocking the men’s restrooms with free menstrual products.
The decision to install women’s products in men’s restrooms on campus is but one of a number of moves the university is making to “improve the transgender community experience on campus.” Students can also opt between using their “correct” name and their “chosen” name on university ID cards, enabling transgender students to pick the name they want to be known by while studying at the university. Furthermore, WSU is now mandating that all new buildings include at least one single-user restroom facility.
Unfortunately, Washington State University isn’t the first educational institution to bend over backwards to accommodate a small, confused portion of the population. The University of Minnesota Twin Cities and the University of Wisconsin have both moved to stock men’s bathrooms with menstrual products and, like Washington State University, both facilities have proudly announced the move as an inclusive, progressive one that makes everyone feel loved and included.
Not everyone is happy with the move to make the men’s room look more like the lady’s room. Conservative students on campus such as WSU Republican President Amir Rezamand naturally feel the move is a ridiculous one that the universities should be embarrassed of rather than be bragging about. It is also hard to imagine that the average man would feel comfortable seeing women’s menstrual products being freely displayed and used in a men’s bathroom. Given the fact that only a small portion of the population identifies as transgender, the move is clearly far from an inclusive one; rather, it is meant to exclude the majority while accommodating a minority group and its vocal advocates.
Those who want to know just how far educational institutions will go to be politically correct in today’s world need only take a look at Brighton in the UK. In 2016, the city council started a policy that involved quizzing children as young as four years old about their gender identity. Now, schools in the area are not only required to provide menstrual products and menstrual product disposal units in all toilet rooms, but also teach boys as young as eight that women aren’t the only ones who have periods; trans boys, trans men and non-binary people can have them as well.
The city council in Brighton has also told schools that social services should be alerted if parents do not support a child’s demand to change his or her sex, and teachers are advised to dismiss any objections that “cisgender” (read: “normal”) students may have about sharing changing rooms and bathrooms with transgender peers. While schools in the United States have not reached this point, many are clearly headed in this same direction and it is not unforeseeable that, in a few years’ time, the above information could be used to describe public elementary schools in the United States.
Washington State University’s move to provide menstrual products in the men’s bathroom may seem like a comical one; however, the issue is far from amusing. It is a known fact that the majority of faculty members in educational institutions across the country are liberal and are pushing so-called “progressive” policies in a bid to create what they view as a tolerant, inclusive environment where no one feels hurt or excluded. However, the push to include those who feel they should have more rights than others is actually excluding the cisgender majority of students.
The focus on creating a politically correct environment detracts from a university’s primary job of teaching young adults the skills they will need to find gainful employment upon graduation. Instead of empowering young people to become responsible, reasonable members of society, many liberal colleges and universities are just reinforcing what many psychologists once referred to as a mental disorder. Needless to say, to deny biological gender as an established reality isn’t exactly academic either.
