House Democrats Champing at the Bit to Impeach and Jail President Trump

Leading House Democrats essentially promised voters that they would focus on “bread and butter” issues such as the economy and infrastructure instead of using their power to attack the president. However, many of these same politicians are now calling not just for the president’s impeachment, but also for him to be thrown in jail as soon as his presidency is over.

The recent “cause for concern” is the fact that President Donald Trump authorized his then-lawyer Michael Cohen to pay off Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal so that they would not go public with their stories of having an affair with Trump. Old allegations regarding collusion with the Russians are also gaining new traction as Cohen has given Special Counsel Robert Mueller information that allegedly corroborates the narrative that Russia worked with President Trump’s campaign to get him elected back in 2016.

The problem with the call to impeach and jail the president is that it is, once again, based on flimsy evidence. PolitiFact, which is well known for its liberal bias, discussed the payments at length earlier this year, and was forced to admit that it would be difficult to charge the president with a crime because a lot depends not only on where the money came from to pay off the two women, but also why the president paid them off. President Trump could make a very good case that he paid the women off for reasons that had nothing to do with his presidential campaign. The site also accurately notes that Democrat John Edwards, who paid off his mistress while running for president a decade ago, was tried but found innocent because prosecutors could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the money was paid for the sole reason of boosting Mr. Edwards’ presidential campaign.

Even so, Democrats are still gleefully using the issue to call for impeachment and jail time for the president. California Rep. Adam Schiff recently told journalists that there was a very real prospect that the president would be indicted upon leaving office and then face jail time. Rep. Jerry Nadler, who is expected to become chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in January, told reporters that the president was at the center of a massive fraud while Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy has publicly stated that a new level in the investigation has been reached. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is promising an investigation into what he calls a “massive fraud on the American people.”

The chances of actually impeaching President Trump are slim to none as Democrats need not just a majority in the House of Representatives, but also two-thirds of the Senate to move forward. However, this has not stopped them from focusing on impeachment all the same.

While there have been various excuses given for starting impeachment proceedings at various points in time, the payment of two adult women who engaged in a consensual affair with a man who is now the president of the United States seems to be the latest justification for the calls for President Trump’s removal from office. What is more, Democrats are taking matters one step further and looking for ways to get President Trump thrown in jail once his term as president is over. While liberal voters and activists are likely pleased with the latest diversion, the truth is that most people stopped caring about the supposed “hush money” payments and “Russia collusion” narratives a long time ago. In fact, people are so disinterested in the Mueller investigation that the Democrats hardly mentioned it during the 2018 mid-term campaigns.

Despite all of this, now that they hold a majority in the House of Representatives, their true colors are showing — and it is clear that they are far more interested in making life difficult for President Trump than in actually governing the nation.
