Jussie Smollett Case Splits the Obama Camp in Two

Jussie Smollett, the troubled actor and lighting rod of controversy, has managed to pit two key figures from the former White House Against each other — both of which are pretty heavy hitters in the Chicago area.

Rahm Emanual, who was President Obama’s former chief-of-staff and also the tough as nail’s Chicago mayor is on one side of the saga, while Chicago Attorney Tina Tchen, Michelle Obama’s former chief of staff is on the other.

Of course, the situation with Jussie Smollett, an African American, gay actor employed by the show “Empire”, is bizarre to say the least. He is accused of faking his own “hate crime” in an attempt to garner sympathy and publicity for being a victim of such. As it turned out, he paid two guys $3,500 to perpetrate the crime, but they decided to be honest when questioned by the police and the truth came out. Jussie was then charged with filing a false police report, among other charges, and later surrendered to police.

“Jussie Smollett took advantage of the pain and anger in racism to promote his career. I’m left hanging my head and asking why,” Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

Luckily for Smollett, who was facing 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct, filing a false police report along with making a false statement to officers, prosecutors dropped the charges. A statement by Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office explains the reason why the charges were dropped.

“Mr. Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago,” the statement read.

Now, it’s time to look at what happened to pit these two former Obama staff on opposite sides of the issue.

“This is actually making a fool of all of us,” Rahm Emanuel said. “Especially in a city that embraced not only him as an actor but more importantly the values of being whoever you are, whoever you love, whatever your background is, you have a home here. He took that and turned it around and tried to self-promote himself.”

The major is considering filing a lawsuit against Smollett to recoup a portion of the money the city wasted on his fake crime.

On the opposite of the issue is former First Lady Obama’s chief of staff. Tchen even reached out to Cook County State’s Attorney after Smollett reported the attack.

“ I wanted to give you a call on behalf of Jussie Smollett and family who I know,” Tchen said. “They have concerns about the investigation. “

Tchen admitted to helping Smollett due to her previous relationship with the family, and also advocated for the case to be turned over the FBI.

Not only has the case involving Smollett disrupted the city of Chicago, but it has even pitted two former Obama advisors against one another. As of yet, the Obamas have not publicly commented on the subject.

Even after the allegations surrounding the case came to light, Smollett has still maintained his innocence. Once the charges against him were dropped, he posed outside of the courthouse with family and adoring fans, thanking them for standing with him. He also gave a half-hearted thanks to the state of Illinois for in his words, “attempting to do what’s right.”
