The climate change hoopla has been around for a long time now; however, it is gaining steam among progressives as socialist darling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez proclaims that addressing climate change is not only akin to the Civil Rights movement of years gone by, but that it will also end racism in the United States.
The comments were made at Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Solving Our Climate Crisis Town Hall, and were in direct reference to Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’ promotion of renewable energy. She told the audience that transitioning to renewable energy would not only inevitably create jobs, but also establish racial, social and economic justice in the country. The declaration was caught on video and subsequently went viral on social media.
Basically, the 29-year-old seemed like she had the chance to rope every social justice term together into one sentence, so she did.
There are some who still praise Ocasio-Cortez for focusing on “man-made” climate change; however, many social media users realized that connecting the end of racism to the “Green New Deal” many progressive Democrats are promoting went a step too far. They accurately noted that a change in climate or weather will not change people’s minds about members of any given race or ethnicity.
Pollution does not cause racism. A “Green New Deal” may very well provide (temporary) jobs to minorities, but the idea that it will result in people of all creeds and nationalities embracing each other and living in peace and harmony forever after is not realistic. Even the mainstream media could not ignore the fact that most people simply aren’t buying this. It’s also hard to buy into Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s recent statement that the struggle to deal with climate change is on par with the moon landing, the civil rights movement and the Great Society combined.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez isn’t the only Democratic politician to link climate change to racism. Sen. Bernie Sanders has done the same, albeit in a more indirect manner. The Racial Justice section of Senator Sanders’ official website states decries “environmental violence” against minorities, stating that poor minority communities are often hit hardest by natural catastrophes as well as man-made pollution. S
en. Sanders, like many Democrat politicians, feels the federal government can solve the problems for good, and so calls on federal agencies to develop plans to deliver climate and environmental “justice” to the poor. He has also called climate change the single biggest threat facing the planet, and promotes taxing carbon pollution as well as cutting carbon pollution by over 80% by the year 2050.
Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has repeatedly shown that she is not familiar with basic governing and economic principles. She does not know what the three branches of government are, thinks that people who work two or three jobs are counted as “employed”, and has publicly complained about not receiving her pay for being in Congress before being sworn in. However, she is certain that she knows exactly how to solve a problem that has plagued civilization for thousands of years.
The solution to racism is now so simple – one simply has to embrace the “man-made” climate change theory, and then eagerly vote for those who would crush the economy to combat it.
The truth is that there are many reasons why natural disasters occur, and man-made pollution is only one and perhaps not even the most important of these reasons. What is more, changes in laws, policies and governing parties has nothing to do with generating feelings of goodwill towards other races. The assertion that promoting renewable energy will eliminate racism is a nonsensical one no matter how you look at it.
