Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s win in New York’s Congressional Primary has put the Democratic Socialists of America back in the news as the organization revels in the fact that one of their own is almost certain to become the youngest member of the House of Representatives.
DSA is also using its recent win to promote its ideology, openly declaring to the public that communism is good in spite of the fact that history clearly shows otherwise. The co-Chair of the Portland DSA chapter was the first to make the declaration via Twitter; her statement was then publicly endorsed by leading DSA members in Charlottesville, Hudson County, Seattle and Queens.
However, it isn’t just the DSA that is endorsing a communist platform. Tom Perez, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, recently stated in an interview that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez represents the future of the Democratic Party.
While some would dismiss the recent attention given to Ms. Ocasio-Cortez and the DSA in general, it is worth noting that the Democratic Socialists of America has seen a recent, significant surge in its membership and its influence is steadily growing — not just locally, but also nationally. The party, which had only 8,000 members when President Donald Trump was elected, now has 42,000 dues-paying members. As of November 2017, there were a total of 35 DSA members holding elected office throughout the United States. Offices include school board membership, city council membership and alderman. Even more importantly, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s pending election to Congress is not only set to give the DSA a member of the House of Representatives but is also influencing prominent Democratic Party politicians to move even further to the left.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Mark Pocan and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio are some of a handful of Democrat politicians who have followed Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s footsteps and called for ICE to be totally abolished while Senator Elizabeth Warren and other prominent Democrats have publicly stated the agency needs to be replaced or completely overhauled.
Immigration isn’t the only hot topic that the DSA is weighing in on. The organization also believes that free markets are incapable of providing adequate public goods and/or services to members of the general public. Its vision for the future includes a massive redistribution of wealth from corporations and wealthy individuals to poor members of society. The organization is pro-abortion, pro-climate change and believes that students have a right to receive a free college and university education. It also embraces the idea of free medical care for everyone.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has openly declared that being socialist is part of who she is, also embraces strict gun control measures, a singer-payer medical system and a Federal jobs guarantee. Her upcoming election and the fact that it is coinciding with an overall shift of the Democratic party to the left of the mainstream, has led to many of these positions becoming more common than they were in the past. California Gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom, for instance, is already promoting a single-payer medical system in the nation’s largest state.
The fact that a growing number of Americans are embracing communism is alarming given the fact that the system of government has murdered more innocent civilians than Adolf Hitler ever did. Reliable estimates show that Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong alone was responsible for the deaths of up to 30 million people, while Russian dictator Joseph Stalin murdered anywhere from 3 to 30 million of his fellow countrymen. It is ironic that many who compare President Trump to Hitler are at the same time embracing a system of government that was actually far more lethal than Nazi Germany.
While many DSA members and leaders undoubtedly have good intentions and are looking for ways to resolve many of America’s most complex problems, the fact remains that the system of government they are pushing will only cause even more pain and heartache for Americans of all ages and walks of life. The fact that a growing number of people are falling for the many promises that communism makes to those who embrace it could very well mean that America will, in the future, look vastly different than it does today.
