When Democrats aren’t talking about President Donald Trump’s allegedly deep ties with the Russian government and Vladimir Putin himself (which isn’t often), they regress back to another tactic — suggesting that the billionaire businessman isn’t as rich as he says he is.
Decades before entering the political arena, Trump maintained a reputation that earned him a hit television show about starting and running businesses, and even some appearances on programs like Saturday Night Live. It was this persona that sold his brand more than anything else: the billionaire builder — one of the most successful in history.
Now, even those of us who are bullish on Trump understand that there is a lot of hyperbole here — because of course there is. Everything about Trump’s personality can be described as hyperbolic. His off-script campaign rallies are packed full of what should obviously be understood as exaggerated statements made for a passionate effect. Just about everyone in the United States knew that this is just who Trump is until about three years ago, when he became a Republican presidential candidate.
With some of Trump’s private tax information now leaked to the press, the media is taking the opportunity to go on the attack. Yes, this is finally how they’re going to get him — by making fun of him for not being quite as absurdly rich in the early 1990s as he is now. Surely, this will bring the blue-collar working class back into the leftist fold, right?
