Presidential candidate and U.S. Senator Kamala Harris and her fellow Democrats are quick to throw stones when President Donald Trump says something they deem politically incorrect. Interestingly, during a campaign event in Londonberry, New Hampshire on September 6, 2019, Harris enthusiastically agreed with a voter’s assertion that Trump’s actions were “mentally retarded.”
For a variety of reasons, the term “retarded” is offensive to many. But, in liberal corners, apparently it’s fair game to use when referring to a president they loathe so devotedly.
According to The Blaze, the voter at the event inquired of Harris, “What are you going to do in the next one year to diminish the mentally retarded actions of this guy?”
Reportedly, a laughing Harris responded, “Well said. Well said. Well, I plan to win this election, I’ll tell you that.”
After the presidential contender was excoriated on social media for endorsing her supporter’s statement, she explained that she didn’t hear what the voter said even though she laughed at their statement. On September 7, Harris remarked, “When my staff played the video from my town hall yesterday, it was upsetting. I didn’t hear the words the man used in that moment, but if I had I would’ve stopped and corrected him. I’m sorry. That word and others like it aren’t acceptable. Ever.”
When a reporter from NBC confronted Harris about the incident at the New Hampshire Democratic Party State Convention, the presidential candidate commented, “Let me just be really clear. I would never condone that kind of language being spoken by anybody about anybody. It is offensive. I would never condone anyone using that word in any way shape or form, even against the guy I am running against. Period.”
Due to showing glee when the voter made his offensive comments about Trump, many didn’t buy Harris’ convenient excuse that she didn’t hear what the supporter said. On social media, one individual stated, “I’m glad you know you’re in the wrong, but what exactly were you laughing at? He asked what are you going to do about this President? If we believe your story you laugh at basic questions, or you r lying. Not a good look.”
Another person said, “This is the, what, 7th or 8th time that Harris has claimed impaired hearing to excuse herself from accountability in the campaign?” One doubter offered, “You told him ‘that’s a great way to put it’ but, okayyyyyy.” Yet another person responded, “Those hurt by these words hear them clearly whenever they are used, like hateful racial slurs, they ring clear to those that suffer from their violent history. If you didn’t hear what the man yelled out, what exactly were you laughing at when you replied ‘well said’?”
Unfortunately for Harris, this wasn’t her only campaign misstep of the past few days. According to Fox News, the Senator maintained “she once sued Exxon Mobil for allegedly misleading shareholders and the public about the threats of climate change” during a town hall on September 4. Intriguingly, several reports have revealed Harris’ claim simply isn’t true. The presidential contender made the assertion when asked by CNN moderator Erin Burnett if she would sue the fossil fuel entity if she became president. Harris replied, “I have sued Exxon Mobil.”
Fox News noted that “InsideClimate News reported last week that although Harris vowed to take on Exxon while she was California’s attorney general in 2016, New York’s Attorney General Barbara Underwood was the only one to actually sue the oil giant.” The outlet maintained, “The California Office of the Attorney General confirmed to the publication that no lawsuit was filed against Exxon from 2011 to 2017, when Harris was the state’s attorney general, or between 2004 and 2011 when she was San Francisco’s district attorney.”
Despite her recent, blatant blunders, Harris apparently still believes she’s a “top tier” 2020 contender. During a sit-down with Fox News and Seacoast Online on September 6, Harris insisted, “Of course I’m part of that top tier and we all know that.”
With former Vice President Joe Biden and fellow U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders currently polling well ahead of her, “top tier” might be a state of mind for Harris rather than a reality.
